The first woman to become a gay, lesbian or bisexual writer in the world has a new book, The Sexual Politics of Gay Marriage.
“I don’t know if the title of the book is going to help,” said Liz Delaney, a writer and director of the LGBTQ Media Network, a nonprofit that publishes and produces documentaries about LGBT issues.
“The title is going, ‘What happens when women become lesbians?'”
But, she said, “I think the title will do two things.
First, it’s going to change the way the gay rights movement is understood.
I think it will make the movement a lot more inclusive, and second, it will give people a way to be involved.”
It’s not just a title.
The book explores the complex intersection of sexuality and gender identity, and Delaney is using her platform as the creator of “The Sexual Politics Of Gay Marriage,” a podcast about queer issues.
She’s also written a book about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender politics and activism, “No Longer Gay,” which was released in 2016.
Delaney and the other creators in the podcast are also producing a new documentary, “The Transsexual Story,” which delves into the history and culture of transgender people.
But it’s Delaney’s book that’s most talked about, and her inclusion in the “Transsexual Story” has created a buzz among LGBT advocates, who say it’s important for queer women to be included in these kinds of discussions.
Delays in visibility The lack of visibility in the LGBTQ world is a huge problem, said Laura Goldsmith, who teaches gender and sexuality at New York University.
“It’s important to say that there is a lack of queer visibility, and that’s a very dangerous thing,” Goldsmith said.
“There are so many stories out there that we’re still not able to tell.
It’s just not a given that we’ll be able to.”
Delaney said the lack of a visibility gap is especially troubling for women who identify as queer.
“That has to be the first thing I hear, is, ‘Oh, I can’t be a lesbian because I’m a woman,'” she said.
Delaying the visibility gap has implications beyond LGBT history, Delaney added.
“If you’re in the gay community and you’re not a woman, you’re less likely to be recognized as a lesbian or a bisexual or a transgender person,” she said in an interview.
That’s why she and the podcast writers decided to call the book, “Why is it so hard to be a woman?”
“I didn’t want to write a book that was going to say, ‘You’re not like us, you have to be more feminine,'” Delaney explained.
“Instead, I wanted to talk about how the world feels about a lot of different ways of being feminine.
So it’s really about that intersection between femininity and femaleness.”
The book’s title and its focus on the history of women are important because it’s the first book written by a lesbian, Delaneys said.
She said that’s partly because the book was written with a different focus, which makes it different from other queer histories and issues.
The authors are also highlighting a range of identities, and in some ways, Delany said, it gives readers a chance to understand more about what it means to be queer in the 21st century.
“We’re in a moment where queer women are more and more represented in mainstream society, and we have to acknowledge that,” she explained.
Delany, a former student at UCLA who now works in media, has been working with Delaney on the podcast for more than a year.
She credits the podcast’s creators with opening up space for women to discuss their gender and identity.
“They have a real responsibility, because we are all people, we are a community, and you have a choice,” Delaney told The Washington Post.
Delaney said that the podcast also has the added benefit of highlighting the fact that many women are still not included in mainstream LGBTQ history.
“So much of the history that we have is about women not being represented at all,” she added.
She and the others hope that this book, as a platform for queer issues, can help to change that.
“This book is really about the power that women have, and how that is not something that is going away anytime soon,” Delany explained.
