I was at a party once and the host was saying that it was his dream to have a woman who was “just like me”.
I didn’t know what he meant by that, but it stuck with me for a while.
It made me feel very special.
At the same time, the host’s words made me realise how much of the world is still very much male-dominated.
That’s not a word I ever intended to use, but I’ve never really been aware of it before.
I don’t know if I’d have felt differently if I hadn’t spent a lifetime making art.
I’m not sure how much time I would have spent thinking about it.
I think there’s something about the idea of ‘this person’ that is still extremely important to me.
That is why I love the work that so many people do, and why I try to make my art that way.
I have so many friends who are women and I want them to be able to see my work and feel connected.
I am a feminist because it’s about people being empowered and free.
That includes me.
When I look at women artists, I often think about the fact that they often don’t have the same experiences that I do, or the same kinds of support systems that I have.
